Copper Sulfate & Vinegar Solution

Ingredients:

Copper sulfate -can be purchased at any supply/hardware store such as Tractor Supply (they use it for algae & root control) 15 lbs is plenty.

Mix enough Copper sulfate (a couple of cups) with about 1/2 litre of white vinegar- enough that the vinegar won’t take any more copper sulfate and some are left in the bottom when mixed. Heat for about 5 minutes – I use a microwave on high for 5 minutes.

Once heated,the copper sulfate doesn’t separate from the vinegar and is ready for use. If you don’t heat it- the two ingredients keep separating from each other and don’t work as effective.

I put the solution in a spray bottle and spray the bottoms and tops of all hooves and soles. The coronet band and the horseshoes might take on a blue tinge- otherwise, there is no noticeable difference except that your horse’s feet become healthier. Thrush goes away, as the solution kills the algae which started the thrush, as well as the algae that were undermining the integrity of the hoof walls creating softer, mushier feet.

I haven’t found it possible to overdose the treatment- for those who were worse I spray their feet bottoms and tops before they go out as well as when they come in twice a day. The rest of our horses get sprayed as needed – 3-5 days a week.
